MARRIOT THEATRE
Fun Home is a musical theatre adaptation of Alison Bechdel’s 2006 graphic memoir of the same name. The story follows Alison Bechdel’s journey of self-discovery, exploring her sexuality, her complex relationship with her father, and her attempt to uncover the hidden truths and contradictions of his life. The set design draws directly from Alison’s drawings, using them to dress the space and reinforce the act of remembering. An outlined metal structure defines the architecture of the stage, embracing the theatricality of theatre in the round. The design is minimalist, modular, and non-realistic, functioning as a form of memory architecture rather than a literal environment. A platform that crosses the stage acts as a bridge between different phases of Alison’s life, allowing past and present to coexist fluidly. During musical numbers, the set becomes illuminated and activated, emphasizing emotional shifts and heightening the theatrical action.
